Ph.D. Materials Science and Engineering

Dr. Shunsuke Yagi is the deputy director of Research Center for Sustainable Materials and Energy Integration and an Associate Professor (also FY2018 The University of Tokyo Excellent Young Researcher) at Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo, and heads a research group as a principal investigator. He was a Visiting Scientist of Department of Materials Science and Engineering (Prof. Rupp’s group, Prof. Allanore's group), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from July 2018 to May 2019. He received his B.S. (2002), M.S. (2004), and Ph.D. (2007) degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from Kyoto University. After his graduation, he was affiliated as Assistant Professor at Kyoto University (2007–2011), Special Lecturer at Osaka Prefecture University (2011–2016), and Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo (2016–present). An assistant to the President since 2023. He specializes in materials electrochemistry, energy conversion/storage materials, and wet surface treatment.

Message to prospective students

In our laboratory, we synthesize, evaluate, and analyze active materials (materials that store electricity) for rechargeable batteries and electrochemical catalysts, and assemble the final devices in an integrated manner. It is a field that requires a wide range of knowledge, but where it is easy to grasp the full scope of research and researchers with diverse backgrounds can collaborate. In addition to electrochemistry, knowledge of solid-state chemistry and structural analysis is essential for the development of active materials and electrochemical catalysts, while thermodynamics and various synthetic methods must be learned for their synthesis. Solvents used in rechargeable battery electrolytes are not only water but also organic solvents and ionic liquids, and the effects of complexation and solvation must be considered. Therefore, knowledge of organic chemistry, complex chemistry, spectroscopy, and other analytical techniques are also required. In addition to the above, approaches from computational science and information science are becoming more and more common worldwide. When we think about energy resources, we also need to be aware of where and how resources are extracted and how they are supplied to us and consumed.

As mentioned above, it is true that a vast amount of knowledge and a broad perspective are required, but this is a laboratory where you can acquire challenging and living knowledge.

Technologies to utilize energy and resources effectively with as little loss as possible are essential now and in the future. We hope to contribute to the realization of a prosperous and sustainable society by clarifying the scientific truth behind it.

As you are reading this, we are making the most of our strengths and continuing to challenge ourselves as one. We look forward to the day when we can research and grow with you.
